(Beauty Director of Yahoo Lifestyle)
As the Beauty Director of Yahoo Lifestyle, Dana Oliver certainly knows a thing or two about beauty. From the red carpet to the runway to the streets, Oliver is a knowledgeable beauty expert in all aspects. As such, she has discussed trending topics and pop culture from a beauty point of view during SXSW, Beautycon Festival New York, on Good Morning America and BBC’s World Have Your Say. Currently, she is also the face of @beautyforbreakfast, a platform that serves beauty, self-care and wellness inspiration.
Essentially, on this platform, she shares the world as she sees it, and she is also looking forward to connect with like-minded individuals. With this platform, Oliver hopes to educate, share and inspire one another. There aren’t many posts at the moment, but the posts are aesthetic photos related to health, wellness or beauty, photos of Oliver herself, as well as relatable quotes meant to inspire. As for what got her started… after grad school, Oliver took up a job as a paid intern at AOL StyleList, which covered fashion, beauty and pop culture. As the team was pretty small then, she had the advantage of getting lots of hands-on experience writing features, producing shoots and interviewing celebrities.
Within six months, Oliver had taken on the full-time role as an assistant editor, eventually being promoted to editor. Her then-beauty editor was the one who actually recruited her for the beauty director role at Yahoo Lifestyle, and the rest, as they say, is history. The issue of race and gender is a constant highlight nowadays, but there’s still a long way to go. As one of the few Black woman editors in the beauty industry, Oliver enjoys her work most by using her platform to elevate the voices and experiences of black women. To maintain a balanced lifestyle, Oliver downshifts by meditating, practicing yoga, reading Iyanla Vanzant’s “Until Today! Daily Devotions”, and listening to Miles Davis.
Thinking about going into the beauty industry, and seeking a career just like Oliver’s? She has some advice for you! “Work hard and remain humble! I’ve held just about every position in the beauty editorial world and I didn’t rush the process. It is imperative to take time to study your craft, build skills, and trustworthy relationships, and truly learn from your mistakes to become successful so that you can one day pay it forward.” Therefore, she’s a firm believer that hard work and positive relationships can open new doors!
