What Are The Side Effects of Waxing?
It is important to learn about the side effects of waxing before you try to use this form of hair removal. Here is a list of some of the possible side-effects of waxing:
Redness and Irritation:
This is the most common side-effect of waxing. Most people will see at least some redness after the procedure. The amount of irritation will depend on the sensitivity of the skin and the area being treated. For example, bikini waxing usually causes more redness than eyebrow waxing. One thing that helps is using an aloe-based gel moisturizer to calm the skin after waxing. ☺
Ingrown Hairs:
With waxing, hair is removed in the opposite direction of growth. This provides a smoother result, but also increases the chances of ingrown hairs. An ingrown hair occurs when the hair strand grows downward instead of upward and becomes trapped under the skin. Ingrown hairs can cause redness, rashes or become painful spot-like pimples. Don’t apply moisturizer if pimples develop to make them go away. In fact, avoid the area becoming particularly moist as that causes bacteria to spread easily, which may worsen the situation.
Redness, Burning and Discoloration:
If the wax is applied too hot for your skin, it can cause a mild burn. This may result in redness, swelling or even blisters. Also, using overheated wax can cause dark spots to appear on the skin. This is called post-inflammatory pigmentation. It is more common on certain skin types and tones. In some cases, it can take months or even up to a year, for this pigmentation to fade.
Infections and Allergic Reactions:
At times, an infection can develop on areas where there was bleeding or a lot of irritation. Occasionally, a piece of skin may get torn during waxing and this can become inflamed. Some people may have an allergy to the ingredients of the wax. Allergic reactions may vary from very mild to quite severe. If you are new to waxing or if you are trying a new product, it is recommended that you test a small area first.
What To-do or Not-to-do Before, During and After Waxing At Home?
In order to make your waxing journey more enjoyable and of course, as pain-free as possible, we have included some important to-do’s and not to-do’s before, during and after waxing. ❤
Before:
1. Cleansing and exfoliating can help to ensure the skin is prepared for waxing thus giving you better results. Any exfoliation should be done 24 hours before waxing. Exfoliating gently helps soften body hair and opens up hair follicles, making waxing an easier and less painful process. Exfoliation also prevents ingrown hair growth.
2. Avoid waxing when your skin is sensitive. Sensitive skin does not make for a pleasant waxing experience. The best time to wax is a week after your menstrual cycle, when your pain threshold is highest.
3. Drinking lots of water will also make the process easier as it helps plump the skin and cause less pain. And when your skin is hydrated, it’s also more supple and less likely to cause ingrown hairs.
During:
1. Don’t apply creams, moisturisers or deodorants on the day of the waxing.
2. Don’t rush into it. Make sure you follow the instructions carefully and if it’s your first time, start on easier body parts, such as your arms, before working your way to the trickier areas, such as your bikini line.
3. While you apply the wax in the direction of hair growth, you must pull in the opposite. Keep the strip close to your skin when pulling it off. Do not hesitate and just PULL!
After:
1. Remove any residue of the wax with cool (hot water will hurt!) water or coconut oil. You may also use a wipe.
2. Soothe and pamper your skin with a moisturiser or unscented aloe vera after the process. If your skin is very red or you are prone to ingrown, do cool compresses with cotton pads or a washcloth, then pat on a bit of witch hazel.
3. Don’t work out, steam or sauna for 24 hours as your follicles are still open and likely to become clogged. Avoid touching the area for a few hours after it is cleaned to minimize any chances of breakouts, especially if you’re waxing any parts of your face.
