There are a variety of hair removal methods we can choose from, but have you ever heard of an epilator? If you haven’t, don’t worry. You’re not alone. Touted as one of the most cost-effective and long-lasting hair removal methods you can employ by yourself, an epilator has become many women’s choice!
Alright, we can see the question marks blooming in your head with every second. Read on to find out more about epilators, and also to find the best epilator for yourself!
What Is An Epilator?
At first glance, an epilator looks just like your regular electric razor or shaver. But don’t be fooled! The thing is that an epilator removes the hair from the root, instead of cutting it on the skin’s surface. Some devices can work as both razor and epilator as they have detachable heads. And just like an electric razor, an epilator is a hand-held device which you move over the areas in which you want the hair removed. Basically, an epilator is just tweezers on a larger scale.
How Does An Epilator Work?
There have been different designs of epilators since its inception, but the most commonly used type today is the tweezer type, and this is how it works. An epilator has a rotating roller containing multiple sets of tweezers. As you pass the epilator over your skin, these tweezers grab hold of multiple hairs, and pull them out at the roots, leaving you with nothing except smooth skin.
What Are The Benefits Of Using An Epilator?
First of all, using an epilator is a cost-effective method of hair removal. All you need is literally the epilator and nothing else. No shaving cream, replacement blades, wax strips, or paying other people to keep doing it for you. Once you have an epilator, you can remove your own hair whenever you want, wherever you want without incurring extra costs.
Secondly, your skin retains its smoothness for longer, especially when compared to shaving. As the hair is removed directly from the root, it takes a longer time to grow back, hence you don’t have to epilate as often. How long, you ask? Each woman’s body is different, so it all depends on you. We can only provide a comparison to shaving! Also, you may argue that waxing also removes hair from the root, which is true, but not everyone knows how to wax effectively, and waxing can be messy.
Are There Any Risks Of Using An Epilator?
Well, no, unless you decide to wield it like a weapon. The only slight downside of using an epilator is the discomfort and pain – but only at first. We’ve mentioned this earlier; epilating is like tweezing. With tweezing, hairs are usually pulled out individually. With epilating, multiple hairs are pulled out instead. Depending on your pain threshold, you may feel slight discomfort or pain. However, with use epilation, you will feel less pain. Not just because your body knows what to expect now, but also because the hair that grows back is finer and weaker, allowing for easier removal.
Epilators vs. Electric Razors
To help you better understand how epilators and electric razors differ, here is a very simple table.
Epilators | Electric Razors | |
Method: | Pulling out hair by the root | Cutting the hair |
Discomfort/Pain: | Some | No |
Results: | Longer-lasting smooth skin | Shorter-lived, may have stubble |
Body Parts: | All parts, though you can get a body part-specific one |
How Do I Use An Epilator?
For best results, exfoliate your skin just before you epilate, as it will remove dead skin cells and help prevent ingrown hairs. Hold the epilator at a 90-degree angle to your skin. Pull your skin tight and slowly move the epilator in the direction of hair growth. Remember not to press the epilator too tightly against your skin; allow some space for it to do its work!
Some epilators also have different speed settings, so you may want to experiment with the different speed settings to see which suits you best! After epilating, you can use a moisturiser to soothe your skin. Pro tip: Use an epilator at night, or when you know you’re not going out immediately after – sometimes epilating can cause some redness, but it’ll go away within a couple of hours!
