It’s no secret that Malaysia’s weather is always hot and humid all year round, with our own four seasons: panas gila babi season, durian season, rainy season and of course, the infamous haze season. “Seasons” aside, sometimes it’s pretty difficult to concentrate when we’re all hot and sweaty. 😩
To cool off nicely and keep you in good spirits all day, why not invest in a portable air conditioner, especially if your living space/workspace has a centralised air system that is unable to keep up, or wall-mounted air conditioners are not an option? Especially if you’re one of those who gets hot really easily, a portable air conditioner will definitely help! Check out these portable air conditioners in Malaysia! 😀
What Is A Portable Air Conditioner?
First things first, let’s find out what a portable air conditioner is exactly. As its name suggests, this cooling device works the same way as a regular air conditioner would, except that it is portable, and most units have wheels to help with mobility. They typically sit on the floor, and are ideal for cooling single rooms, though sizes may vary. As aforementioned, portable air conditioners are excellent for helping with cooling and ventilation where centralised air systems do not work well as expected. 😊
How Does A Portable Air Conditioner Work?
A portable air conditioner works by removing warm air and moisture while cooling down the surroundings. As such, the unwanted warm air would have to go somewhere – usually out the window, though you can also vent through a wall, drop ceiling, or door. If there’s no exhaust, the portable air conditioner will not work.

And now that we’re done with the products, it’s time to learn a little bit more about portable air conditioners!
Portable Air Conditioner vs. Air Purifier
They may look similar, but their functions are quite different. Basically, an air conditioner cools the air, while an air purifier cleans it. A (portable) air conditioner works by draining hot air out and pumping cold air in, which controls the temperature and humidity of the surrounding air. On the other hand, air purifiers cycle the air through filters or neutralises the air through ionisation, which removes particles, pollutants and odours that affect the quality of the air. Air purifiers do not control temperature or humidity of the air, only the quality. With air conditioners, you get cooler air. With air purifiers, you get cleaner air. 😀
Do All Portable Air Conditioners Have To Be Vented Out A Window?
They don’t necessarily have to be vented out a window per se, but the hot air has to go somewhere. As mentioned earlier, you can actually vent portable air conditioners through a wall, drop ceiling or door – as long as there is somewhere for the hot air to go. Most (if not all) portable air conditioners come with a venting kit as well, so all you have to do is install it properly. 😊
Why Is My Portable Air Conditioner Not Cold?
There are usually a few reasons why you feel like your portable air conditioner isn’t as cold as expected. First of all, it could be due to air flow blockage, which means that there are obstacles right where the device is pulling in air. No air, no cool air. Or maybe, the venting hose is too long, which causes problems in getting rid of the hot air. Usually, the shorter the hose, the better it is at venting the hot air. 😄
Your portable air conditioner could also be not as cold due to a dirty or clogged filter. Once in a while, do remember to check on the filter and clean it regularly. It could also be that your portable air conditioner is of the wrong size. Not its physical size, but its cooling power, known as BTU ratings. A BTU rating that does not match your area proportions will result in a less effective cooling system. Do keep in mind that portable air conditioners are meant for small areas, or supplementary devices where the central air conditioning is less effective, and not intended to be a main ventilation/cooling air system. 😊
Last but not least, if the ambient temperature is really high, then your portable air conditioner may not be able to cool the air fast enough, as temperatures are high. If there is sunlight, try shutting the curtains to avoid from too much sun, as the heat can affect the room’s temperature more than you think! 😀
Do Portable Air Conditioners Use A Lot Of Electricity?
Generally, when used correctly, they use much less electricity than your regular A/C. It’s no secret that electricity bills from air conditioners can cost a bomb, but portable air conditioners can help you save on some of that money. 🤩 For example, use your regular air conditioners and portable air conditioners in a smart manner. For quick cooling across a larger area, switch on your regular A/C. To cool a room or confined space, use a portable air conditioner instead of the regular one. With correct usage of your different A/Cs, you’ll be able to save up on your electricity bill! 👍
Can I Leave A Portable Air Conditioner On All Day?
Technically, you could, but why would you? By all day, we mean 24/7. We recommend only using it when you need it for financial and safety reasons. You’d be wasting so much electricity (and money) leaving it on all day, especially if you’re talking about the one at home when you’re out at work. Second of all, you can never be too careful with electrical devices – electrical accidents can and do happen, and you don’t want to be on the receiving end of these accidents. So the bottom line is, maybe don’t leave it on all day. ☺
Can A Portable Air Conditioner Overheat?
Yes, yes it can. Just like your regular A/C or any other device, really, you have to take good care of it to avoid it from malfunctioning, or in this, overheating. Your filters should be cleaned and/or replaced regularly so the portable air conditioners don’t use more energy and run longer than necessary, and keep your condenser coils clean. In the case of overheating, check the refrigerant level as well. Last but not least, the older your device is, the more prone it is to malfunctions, so if your portable air conditioner is old, don’t be surprised if it overheats. Perhaps it’s telling you it’s time to get a new one! 😀
How Long Do Portable Air Conditioners Last?
Generally, portable air conditioners can last for about 10-15 years. Infrequent or extremely frequent use may cut short its lifespan slightly, but with moderate use they can last even longer, depending on how you care for it as well. 😊
Are Portable Air Conditioners Worth It?
Survey your area and how you would use your portable air conditioner. Are you cooling a big area, or a small room? Is that room in particular really hot, and is there a space for your portable air conditioner? Is there any other cooling system in place? These questions are just a few you should consider before getting a portable air conditioner, and our verdict is that portable air conditioners are worth it if you have a relatively small space to cool, or will be using it as a supplementary cooling device, have a suitable space for it, and do not over-depend on it to keep you cool 24/7. ❤

And that’s all on our lesson for portable air conditioners today? With Malaysia’s crazy hot weather, we sure could use one of these! Have you tried any of these portable air conditioners in Malaysia? Which is the best portable air conditioner? Let us know in the comments below! 😀💕
