We’re mere weeks from our 62nd Independence Day, fellow Malaysians! And you know what that means – it’s time to show your patriotism! This year we have a pretty unique way for you to celebrate Merdeka, by way of latte art. Don’t worry, we’re not asking you to make your own latte art, but to come enjoy the latte art at this cafe, where they will be creating super cute latte art of Malaysian animals in conjunction with Merdeka. 😍
Where can you locate this cafe, you ask? At Icon Brewings, a cosy cafe nestled within a corner in Cheras! 👍
What’s So Special About Icon Brewings?

Those days, Instagram was plastered with posts of cups of coffee with pretty latte art. ☕ Coffee then practically got shoved out of the way with the re-emergence of bubble milk tea. (If we remember correctly, the timeline was Chatime-era followed by only about another hundred bubble tea shops, then the coffee-era, then the comeback of bubble milk tea.) 😅

You’re in luck, for Icon Brewings has a number of accolades regarding coffee-making, with the most recent being the 2nd Runner-Up of the Malaysia Open Latte Art Championship 2019! 😀
The barista who snagged this award is Oong Zhe Yuan, who is only 20 years old. He has been with Icon Brewings for a year, who saw his potential and trained him in the art of latte art. Besides the ubiquitous tulip art that is a must for all who practice latte art, Zhe Yuan is also talented with animal latte art. He could create a number of animals in your cup of coffee, but we’re highlighting his Malaysian animals in conjunction with Merdeka day! ❤

A Hair Salon In A Cafe?
Icon Brewings is a cosy, comfortable corner-lot cafe in Cheras, conveniently near Cheras Leisure Mall. They serve a wide range of cafe food, ranging from salads, soups, toasties, pasta and main courses among others. Not only that, but they also operate side by side with a hair salon, Belleza! No, not next door, but using the same space. 🤩
Think about it, you can treat yourself to a haircut or treatment, and boyfie can just enjoy coffee right there while you do your hair. What’s more, Belleza currently has a super worth-it promotion: at only RM188, you can either choose soft rebonding, Korean perm or colouring for your hair. If you take up that package, you will also be entitled to a free haircut and treatment, regardless of hair length! OMG yes! 🙌

Healthy Toast Series (Savoury)
Photo Credit: Icon BrewingsOn their current menu, you can only find two of these: Avocado Toast with Boiled Egg, and Pumpkin Toast with Scramble Egg. However, we were presented with a completely new selection by the owner of Icon Brewings, Nicolas. If you read this and decide you want to try it out for yourself, no worries even though they’re not on the menu yet, no worries. Simply show them the picture of what you want and they’ll be able to fix it right up for you. 👍
As part of Icon Brewings’ mission to encourage healthy eating, this new series of toast is both healthy and yummy! We were served six different toast sets, but we’re highlighting our favourite three! 😍🌟
Note: All toast sets comes in a set of two slices, but since we were just trying, we had one slice instead of two.
🍞 Beetroot Hummus + Avocado Toast/ Sweet Mango Salsa Toast
The beetroot hummus is an attractive magenta shade with an authentic hummus taste. Generously spread over toast, the beetroot hummus is then topped with avocado slices. You would think that avo and hummus would be too similar, but in fact the ingredients complement each other well! For all those looking for a healthy option and something not too heavy-tasting, this is the one for you! 😀
A variation of the “original” salsa toast, this sweet mango salsa adds a little more kick and flavour due to the presence of mango. While the salsa toast has a very authentic taste, the mango salsa is for those who prefer a more unconventional salsa and crave for the sweetness of mango in each bite! 😋
🍞 Smoked Salmon + Pesto Toast
Wow, just wow. 😍 Honestly, this one was love at first bite. First of all, the pesto spread is generous but not overwhelming. Second, the smoked salmon is cooked just right, not over- or undercooked – so everyone can enjoy it. The salmon and pesto then blend together seamlessly in your mouth to create an absolute delica- sorry, what were we saying? We daydreamed about this toast for a minute there. 🤩
Icon Toasties (Sweet)
Last but not least, we have another two more toasties to introduce to you, of the sweet variety. If you thought that their savoury toast was already attractive enough, you’re not going to be able to fight the lure of these ones. These toasties are also not on the menu yet, but you could just show them the pictures, and they’ll be able to make it for you as well. Let’s go! ❤

🍞 Peanut Banana Series
Is there a better combination than peanut butter and banana? 🍌 No, no there is not. Peanut butter is generously spread atop a slice of bread, further topped with banana slices and some rolled oats and granola pieces. Honestly, where has this peanut banana toastie been all our lives?! If you like cream, there’s also a small jug of thick cream to go with it. It looks deceptive heavy, but it is in fact light and frothy, and complements the peanut butter taste very well. Don’t like cream? That’s fine too, the peanut banana combo is enough to make you want more just as it is! 😋
🍞 Berries & Cream Cheese Series
The cream cheese spread isn’t thick, so don’t worry if you feel like the cream cheese will spoil everything else. There are strawberry slices, strawberry chunks and whole blueberries on the cream cheese spread. With each bite, you’ll experience the contrasting flavours of the berries and cream cheese, which is something you don’t get everyday. Not to mention that berries are a healthy option for the health-conscious, being anti-oxidants and everything. 👍
🥣 Seafood Pumpkin Soup
Who would have thought that seafood and pumpkin would go so well with each other? Not us, definitely, but we were very pleasantly surprised by this unusual yet heartwarming soup! ❤ A hearty pumpkin soup infused with just a hint of seafood taste is topped with prawns, calamari rings and mussels – it already looks like the beginning of seafood heaven. 👍
Here’s what one of our editors said about the soup: “10/10 will drive all the way from Klang (she lives in Klang) and brave the jam just to order this, even if there’s no parking outside.” That’s dedication, guys, and the seafood pumpkin soup is the star of Icon Brewings’ food. 🌟
Malaysian Animals Latte Art
Right, so back to the super cute latte art. 😍 As aforementioned, Zhe Yuan can whip up a number of Malaysian animals in your coffee cup, including hornbill, elephant, swinging monkey, turtle and the face of an orang utan just to name a few. In conjunction with Independence Day celebrations, he has decided to bring them out in full force! 🙌
