Mention “Johor”, and the first food item that usually pops into most people’s minds is “otak-otak“! For those who love trying out local food, perhaps you may even think about Laksa Johor, lontong, mee rebus and mee bandung among others.

Traditional Johorean food is all good and well, but the cafe scene in Johor Bahru is booming as well, and it would be a shame to not try them out when you visit. 😃 Without further ado, here are 12 cafes in JB (Johor Bahru) for some good food, and good vibes! 👍

 

1. Mok Mok Brunch & Bistro (Taman Pelangi, JB)

Decked out in greenery inside out, you’ll feel like you’re dining in a garden at Mok Mok Brunch & Bistro. Not only is this cafe in Johor nature-friendly, but they also strive to bring you the freshest local products! Most of their menu items consist of rice bowls, burgers and dessert, and apparently, their Kumo Ultimo is a must-try – only freshly prepared upon order. This is actually cream cheese souffle pancakes with cookie crumbs, mousse, and ice-creammmmmmmmmmm. 😍(Editor’s note: Our writer started drooling and forgot to lift her finger off the “m” key.)

Plus, their rice bowls include various options as well, such as lamb, unagi, and Australian beef tenderloin! 😋

2. Chaiwalla & Co. Container Cafe (Jln Tan Hiok Nee, JB)

One of the halal cafes in JB, its name gives it away – this is a cafe housed in a container! Their specialty? Handcrafted artisan teas! However, it’s not just any ordinary tea they craft, for you can choose to customise your tea from 3 bases, 15 flavours, and 9 different toppings! 😍

And just like the other “special-tea” cafes you know such as Tealive, Chatime, Gong Cha etc., the sweetness level of your drink can be adjusted to your liking. We don’t know about you, but we feel like we can be tea-ristas by crafting our own teas, even though it’s on the other side of the tea-making section! 👍

3. Coffee Valley (Iskandar Puteri, JB)

You can bet anything that if this was a natural destination to visit, we’d stay there and never leave, simply because it’s Coffee Valley! However, seeing as we don’t have such a place, we can make do with this halal cafe in JB. Kind of a hidden cafe, you really have to spot the staircase that leads up to this cafe, which is hidden by a kopitiam. 😄

They serve brunch, coffee and dessert, but what’s really interesting is that you can build your own brunch platter! That’s right, your brunch is now customisable, and each platter is served with coffee, tea, or juice. We’re loving this option, because now no one can stop us if we want a whole plate of mushrooms as a meal! 😍

4. B.LO.C.

Go bananas for bananas here because B.LO.C. actually stands for The Banana LOver Crib! Okay, so it isn’t exactly a cafe, but rather a food truck. However, we decided it should make the list, because bananas! It should be no surprise that their specialty is pisang goreng, or fried banana fritters. 😋

You can choose how you want your pisang goreng to be served: with cheese, dark chocolate, or even dipped into ice-cream! If you think that that’s actually just kind of meh, then perhaps you can try out the crunchy golden cereal-coated pisang goreng, deep-fried to crispy perfection, and then topped with sinfully hot caramel sauce! ❤

5. Faculty of Caffeine (Jalan Trus, JB)

Oh wow, how we wished that there was a faculty of caffeine back when we were in university! That would have made things so much easier. For the extreme coffee lovers, or self-proclaimed coffee aficionados, this is your place, as Faculty of Caffeine serves rich, aromatic, complex coffees. 😮

If you’re just looking for a normal cuppa, don’t worry, they have the usual selections too! A crowd favourite in particular seems to be the waffle and ice-cream-sided espresso. Besides that, they have a selection of mains to choose from as well, including pasta, ramen, rice bowls, and breakfast food. 😋

6. Tropique Cafe & Restaurant (Taman Ekoflora, JB)

Clean, sleek and minimalist, Tropique Cafe & Restaurant keeps it from being cold and unfeeling by balancing it up with green walls and leafy plants – truly befitting its name! This cafe in Johor can house 120 pax, and their menu is inspired by the French, and provide you with a good selection of wine to pair. 😍

Whether it’s brunch, high tea, or a romantic date, Tropique Cafe & Restaurant can be the perfect setting! Plenty of windows let in ample natural light, letting you feel like you are indeed dining in the great outdoors, only minus the heat! Oh, and also, if you have any event, you can rent out their cafe as well, and they will cater to your event needs! 👍

7. The Brew Orchestra (Taman Molek, JB)

They don’t actually have an in-house, live orchestra, but their interior design does take after grand halls! This cafe in JB serves breakfast food, sandwiches, coffee and tea, cakes, as well as waffles among others. Well-lit and rather spacious, this is a great spot for you to chill all day, or work all day, whichever floats your boat. 💕

The waffles seem like a go-to option, but their pasta looks pretty good as well. Furthermore, they’ve been awarded with the Malaysian Aeropress Championship back in 2014, and their cafe is also for rent should you need a place to hold your event! 👍

8. Bev C (Jln Tan Hiok Nee, JB)

A halal cafe in Johor Bahru, did you know that Bev C doubles up as a fashion label as well? That’s right, when you visit Bev C, you get to experience fashion and coffee under one roof! Bev C is housed along the street with many other hipster cafes, and you might just miss it if you don’t keep your eyes peeled. 😃

As soon as you find it and step in, you’ll be greeted with clothes instead of chairs and tables, but all you have to do is ascend the stairs at the back of the store, and you’ll be at the cafe area. Try out their ice cube espresso/tea with milk, which they’re renowned for, and don’t forget their chocolate mint pie as well; it’s probably their most Instagrammed food item! ❤

9. Big Bites Cafe (Jln Tan Hiok Nee, JB)

“Every Bite . A Delight” proclaims Big Bites Cafe! This cafe in JB serves mains, pizzas, pastas, dessert, and drinks. For dessert, they have creme brulee, chocolate cake, and waffles, but it’s clear that they highlight their mille crepe since it’s a category all by itself. 😍

What really grabbed our attention and made cartoon heart-eyes pop out instantly was their mille crepe rainbow/Nutella. Excuse us, but we need both right now, because what’s not to love with colourful dessert? The excitement surrounding Nutella on the other hand is pretty self-explanatory. Their dessert is inspired by French and Italian recipes, so don’t miss out! 🤩

10. Urban Artisan Cafe (Taman Mount Austin, JB)

Urban Artisan Cafe started off in Penang, but it has since launched in KL, and now, it is a cafe in Johor Bahru too! It specialises in soft serve ice-cream, and their ice-cream indeed looks like a dream come true with its pastel colours, all swirled to perfection. 😍

With unique colours come unique flavours, and some of their flavour combinations include Oceanice Sea Salt + Chocolate Hazelnut, Quenchy Watermelon + Hokkaido Lavender, and Coal Black Thai Coconut + Taro Yam. What’s more, their flavours change weekly, so you can keep going back and never be bored! 😋

11. Coffee Signature (Taman Sri Tebrau, JB)

With a name as such, you’d expect that they’re best known for their coffee, but in fact, their signature seems to be a cotton candy item, aptly named Sweet Little Rain. What happens is that you are served cotton candy and coffee or tea, and melted droplets of the cotton candy fall into your hot beverage. Sweet rain indeed! Similar to Chaiwalla & Co., Coffee Signature too is housed within a container. Try out their Mini Fritata – salad, garlic bread, ham, cheese, and eggs! 👍

12. Good Morning Food Truck 早 · 尚好 (Taman Ekoflora, JB)

Okay, this is another misleading name because they do actually have a physical store now, though their food truck still operates nearby if you are buying to-go. 早 · 尚好 Good Morning Food Truck serves handmade, Taiwanese-style breakfast sandwiches, which means toast galore! 😍

If you’re looking for a little something heavier than bread, they do have some mains in the form of sesame noodles and braised pork rice as well, so don’t worry. But honestly, get their toast. They specialise in toast and it would be a crime to not get them! 💕
